We are so humbled by the support Alisha received when we helped her explain the need for toys in hospitals this holiday period. In case you missed it, we are teaming up with some of our own Starlight children to help them raise $2,500 each to ensure at the end of our fiscal year, we do not have to say ‘no’ to the hospitals across Canada who are requesting more toys to ensure the children in-hospital over the holidays do not miss out on receiving gifts.
Today, we share Qadim’s story.
Qadim was born with Angelman Syndrome, a genetic disorder that mainly affects the nervous system. At five years old, Qadim has faced countless hospital visits and even more tests. He was scheduled for his first surgery at just 1 month old. People with Angelman syndrome are generally nonverbal, and the majority of them suffer from seizures too. Another common trait is that they have a very happy demeanour, full of smiles and laughter. Qadim is no exception, and his personality shines through at every moment, full of kindness and an enthusiasm to make friends – whether it’s with his doctors, caregivers or other children like him.
In fact, last year Qadim was very excited to give back through a toy-drive he saw in a local toy store, and so when the opportunity came about to raise money for Starlight’s Home In-Hospital for the Holidays campaign, his mom knew this was the perfect fit for him.
Qadim has had a lot of great experiences with Starlight’s out-of-hospital programs, but now wants to ensure children like him receive that same feeling when they’re stuck in hospital.
This year, thousands of children will experience the holidays from a hospital bed. The least we can do for them, and Qadim, is ensure the happiness is spread by ensuring they receive gifts from Starlight.
